Refresh Appalachia is an exciting place to work! We have a great team, do interesting projects, provide lots of training, and are always trying new things.
Crew Members in our program follow our 33-6-3 training model. For 33 hours a week they learn production, marketing and business skills by working at our farms. They also spend 6 hours a week taking community college classes and 3 hours working on life skills such as financial management, parenting, and healthy cooking. Work hours count towards college credit, and after 2-2.5 years in the program, participants graduate with an Associate’s Degree.
Crew Chief and Staff positions are also available from time to time.
Wayne, Lincoln, and Mingo County
Are you interested in an exciting career in sustainable agriculture?
We are looking for Crew Members to work on our Wayne, Mingo, and Lincoln County crews. This is a unique, challenging, and rewarding position for those interested in developing a career in the agriculture sector. Crew members participate in paid on-the-job training at our training farms while at the same time working towards an Associates Degree.
About the program
Our initiative aims to transform the lives of young people in the region and those displaced by the coal mining industry. Crew members participate in a workforce development program according to our 33-6-3 model: 33 hours a week are spent doing on-the-job training on farm and food projects, along with participation in workshops and trainings; 6 hours a week are devoted to community college and business classes for an Associate’s Degree in Applied Sciences; and 3 hours a week are committed to personal development coaching. As a social enterprise, Refresh Appalachia strives to blend the efficiency and production of the for-profit sector with the compassion and purpose of the charitable sector.
About the training
Refresh Appalachia enhances the knowledge and skills of crew members through a network of training farm sites. Each site functions like a business, selling farm products to customers and the public while providing a hands-on training opportunity for the crew. Products produced include vegetables, microgreens, mushrooms, eggs, fish and livestock. Crew members will experience these various types of farming and learn about sales, marketing, infrastructure and business planning for a farm enterprise. Crews are mentored by Crew Chiefs who are knowledgeable about farm business management.
